The Department of Transportation unveiled a landmark investment package this morning aimed at revitalizing America’s passenger rail network and intercity transit hubs. The initiative allocates over $14 billion toward shovel-ready projects spanning the Northeast Corridor, the Chicago-Midwest connection, and high-growth transit lanes across the Sunbelt.
Federal transportation officials highlighted that the modernized corridors will feature next-generation electric rolling stock capable of speeds up to 180 mph, significantly reducing regional carbon emissions while easing gridlock along congested interstate highways.
“This represents the most ambitious passenger rail modernization effort in over fifty years,” stated the Transportation Secretary during a press briefing at Chicago Union Station. “We are delivering faster, cleaner, and more dependable connections between commerce centers and suburban communities.”
